ABSTRACT

The Mekong River Delta of Vietnam currently produces 23 million tons (Mt) of paddy production, and correspondingly about 4.6 Mt of rice husk, from which different uses of this by-product have been developed.

This paper describes the status of rice husk use in the MRD with focus on energy production: first on the use of loose rice husk for paddy drying, brick making…; next some technologies to make rice husk products, to gasify rice husk for power; and some research results related to rice husk for energy from various scientific institutions. The data are updated with a survey on rice husk in four typical provinces of MRD in November 2012, from which the current potential of rice husk in this region is assessed.
